Postgraduate research assistant (0.65% TVL-E13) contributing to the sub-project “Slavery and Loyalty: The Russian and Ottoman Empires” of the priority program “Transottomanica: Eastern European-Ottoman-Persian dynamics of mobility” funded by the German Research Community.
The sub-project “Slavery and Loyalty: The Russian and Ottoman Empires” focuses on interpretations and conflicts of loyalty of manumitted, ransomed or eloped captives and slaves who returned to the Muscovite Empire (16th-17th centuries). In collaboration with historians of the Ottoman Empire and Persia the sub-project investigates representations of their lives, of enslavement, dependency and manumission from the perspective of transcultural studies of mobility. Through the lens of mobility, the members of “Transottomanica” will publish during the first phase of approval, among other publications, one collective publication per working group on one of the general subjects mobile actors, circulation of knowledge and economic processes of exchange in the spaces connecting the Ottoman, Persian and Russian Empires. The University of Bonn offers a broad variety of premodern global area studies and proximity to international organisations. The position will be fully funded (0.65%) for 33 months and offers the opportunity for qualification.
Completed university degree concentrating on eastern European or Russian history, German or English language at conference levels, Russian language skills and familiarity with the international debates on the history of the Muscovite Empire and on slavery and social dependency in the Muscovite and Ottoman Empires. Desirable would be knowledge of Old Russian and Ottoman or Persian; the successful applicant will take part in the meetings of the priority program and in summer schools on source languages and paleography, such as funded for members by the priority programme “Transottomanica”.
Please send CV, covering letter, writing sample (pdf of degree thesis or article) and a project description of no more than three pages, focusing on the subject from the point of view of the Muscovite Empire. Preference will be given to those who formulate their own perspective or dissertation project, however, as close as possible to the subject field of the sub-project.
