My research interest range from history of life science, especially biogeography and ecology, the history of popular science and visual culture to environmental history. He holds a Ph.D. from Humboldt University of Berlin and has held postdoctoral fellowships at the University of Erfurt, Huntington Library (San Marino), and Harvard University. Between 2008 and 2011 he was a predoc at the Max Planck Institut for the History of Science, Department II (Lorraine Daston). His doctoral research concentrated on mapping-practices in 19th-century plant geography. At the ETH Zürich, Nils focusses on a group project that explores the environmental history of Frankfurt Airport. It relates to his broader interest in infrastructures and their hybrid ecologies.
